About the facility
Allegheny Place

Allegheny Place is located less than three miles from the Allegheny River in Penn Hills Pennsylvania. We enjoy country living but are close enough to Pittsburgh for an afternoon trip into the city for restaurants, shopping and entertainment. We have four hospitals within six miles of our community as well as three churches in our neighborhood.

We strive to keep our residents active and healthy through engaging activities and plenty of opportunities for socialization:

  • Yoga classes
  • Knitting club
  • Craft room
  • Lounges
  • Beauty and barber salon
  • Delicious meals served in our restaurant style dining room

Our protected outdoor courtyard is a popular place during the spring and summer. Residents enjoy walking among the flowers, watching the squirrels scamper through the trees and just relaxing in the sun. Residents, visitors and staff alike enjoy our barbecues and social events in the courtyard.

Our comfortable apartments are perfect for either single or double occupancy. Apartments come equipped with kitchenette and microwave as well as built in safety features.

A perfect fit
I have had nothing but positive experiences at Allegheny Place. The staff is very attentive, compassionate and friendly. The activities Director does a great job of engaging the residents via games, trivia, bingo, outside, musical guests, soloist, guitarist, pianist, violinist. Rescue dog visits etc.. she also provides educational information. There is a nurse practitioner that is on site every Thursday that is a benefit. Also, they have a Podiatrist that comes every few months.

Review for Allegheny Place
Had it not been for one incident involving a price change I would rate it a 4 but because of 2 prices in one year it's a 3 The staff is wonderful, especially after coming from [facility removed]. [name removed] the sales director is amazing. She went above and beyond anything that was expected. Her personal touch and help with my parents was wonderful and very appreciated. The price issue we had was after about 6 months and my parents becoming acclimated they told us that the price we had agreed upon was an error and they had it raise it to fix the error. It was a car dealership move. Extremely unprofessional. Then about 5 months later they said they had to raise the price again because the care level had changed. That is totally understandable however when the price went up and the "care level" changed the services provided did not. In other words what they said was included in the revised care level never happened and we eventually realized despite the wonderful staff these games could not continue and we left.

Would recommend, but go in with eyes open
Administrative staff: [name removed] gets a 5. [name removed] a 2 (rarely returned phone calls or responded to emails). [name removed], the nurse, a 2. Rated his level of care at a 3 when it should have been a 1.

Friendly and family-like atmosphere, highly recommend
It had a friendly, family feel to it. The staff that visit the patients rooms (cleaning, med techs, physician assistant) are so friendly. My in-laws immediately felt at home. We were able to put up family pictures and mementos on the walls which made all the difference. We switched their PCP to the physician practice that comes to AP every Thursday and that has been tremendously beneficial. The PA visits every patient every Thursday to check in with them! We didn't even realize they had PT and OT come right to the rooms, that was an unexpected surprise. Negatives: Many of the activities listed on their activity calendar aren't actually "activities". For ex: "water your plants" or "call a friend" or watch football in your room." The billing hasn't been smooth but we're working through it.

overall a nice community
I like that it is small. 39 residents. The woman who does the activities is wonderful! Lots of energy. My mother is a very picky eater, so we supply frozen meals. The facility is nicely laid out. It is a big square with a courtyard in the middle.

Amazing staff overall
The staff is amazing but they are often short on staff due to illness or other circumstances. The facility could use a facelift but my father is well cared for.

Staffing issues and don't recommend
The care there is bad. They need more staff. They gave my mom someone else's meds a month ago. Since under the new management or owners it's horrible. All who live there complain about the food. It's bad.

Waste of money
The staff are lazy, unkept and smell of weed. They hire anybody and clearly have a high turnover rate. The food is gross. For how much we pay we sure don’t get much. I can’t believe this place is still open .

Review so far
It’s a perfect place for my mom. It’s small, clean, staff is nice, the place itself is nice. The only issue we’ve had is w her meds. It’s been hard to navigate this. We were not given a protocol for this or directions on paper. I had to ask how it was done so took awhile after she moved in to get this all right. We are using the pharmacy the place uses and she pays a fee. The doctor wanted to send over a list of her prescriptions to Allegheny place as instructed after he sent the list to the pharmacy. Allegheny place said they could only take fax not emails. That’s not the most up to date way to receive things anymore. So I had to go back and forth w them bc they don’t use email. Also, we filled out the food preference sheet when she moved in and she can’t stand eggs and noted this and they still only bring her eggs. Lol! All ok bc they make her a peanut and jelly sandwich instead. But would be great if pancakes or other things could be offered. No one paid attention to her paper.

the staff is really friendly and helpful.
The reason we gave the value for cost a 3 out of 5 is because the rent is reasonable, but he pays an extra [name removed] a month for care. We don't know when or if they will raise the amount for his level of care. It's really clean. It doesn't have that nursing home smell. It's also bright and feels more like an apartment.

Our Experience
There's different levels of care. Make sure that your family member's level of care doesn't exceed their ability to provide it, that the needs fit their service level. They did have some staffing issues, but the staff were all very nice and competent. The food I tried was good quality and presented well. It didn't seem thrown together quickly - it looked like it took an appropriate level of skill from the people who prepared it. They also had a big calendar of activities. I would recommend the community to other families.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Pennsylvania regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Pennsylvania regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored Allegheny Place 8.9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
