Great Experience

I could not have been more pleased with the care my mom received at Avalon. She was always clean, and well groomed. My mom used to love to take long showers at home & they bathed her daily unlike many other facilities. Despite her dementia diagnosis, she seemed to make friends with the other residents and really connected with the caregivers who took such great care of her. They did a great job to make my mom feel special. From time to time, I would get sent photos of my mom playing Bingo which she loved.

Avalon is a good home for your loved one

I think the residents are well looked after - my husband is always clean, dressed and fed, but his teeth could use more frequent brushing. I have not seen any interaction between the caregivers and him. His teeth are not brushed frequently enough, and I wish the staff would keep me informed about my husband's condition. I think the residents are, generally, well looked after. The place is clean and doesn't smell like other homes like this one do. I would like more communication with the staff - that they call me if the nurse went and saw, for example, that my husband's bed sores were treated, or if he's having a bad day. My husband says he's happy there, and has stopped asking to come home, and that's,a good thing.

We are also thrilled you found the facility to be homey and a better alternative to the large facilities. We feel all facilities have pros & cons. If one is looking for a facility that does activities all day long, a large facility is wonderful for that. Our homes do 3 per day and there is down time. We share that a few times to families when they are touring so they can make the best choice for their loved one when choosing a facility. The down time is spent together in the living room or dining room much like one would do in their own home. We invite and encourage the residents to participate in the activities we offer. However, there are times in which one may say no, and we do honor their "no". We do have a dietician that comes to our homes to consult with diets and the menus. We offer special diets and can individualize them with the help of the dietician. We truly appreciate you took the time to write a review. Not only do we find the feedback helpful as a company, but others taking the time to read it as they search for a facility for their loved one will as well.

Avalon House Cawdor Court

We cannot express our complete joy and hippieness that our mother received at the Avalon House at Cawdor Court. Mom was there for over 5 years and the total care and attention including the staff's friendship for life was outstanding! Opal and Noel were with her all five years, and they kept our family at peace with their care and love for her. Keith, Rieta, Mark and Marianna.

I would give a 5 in all categories except for meals and activities. I would give both of those a 3 or 4. I just think the resident, my mother in law, just didn't really enjoy those offerings. But that could have been more on her than the staff.

I highly recommend Avalon House for your loved one

Avalon House balances both professional care and personal wellbeing. We struggled finding an establishment that could provide the level of care my mother needed, but we knew we found the right place after a few weeks of moving to Avalon House. The staff cares about the people they watch over and work with the families to meet their needs and expectations. My mom has been able to create relationships with both the staff and other patients. The food they make is homemade and always smells delicious. The house is always clean. They are flexible around visits and welcome us to come whenever. I am confident my mom is in good hands. I can't thank the staff enough for the care they provide and the assurance it provides me knowing she receives attentive, loving care.

Home for my Aunt

My aunt has been a resident at Cawdor Court for several years. She is well taken care of. Several of her care givers have been there since she first moved in. She particularly enjoys the breakfast every morning.

Great place for mom

My mother was 96-years old, had numerous health issues, and had been suffering from dementia for six years when we moved her to Avalon House on Cawdor Court. The loving care that she received at Avalon House on Cawdor Court resulted in her living to just short of her 100th birthday. The staff members were friendly and took care of both her and our needs. The house was always neat and orderly and is in an attractive neighborhood. We always enjoyed spending time with our mother at Avalon house on Cawdor Court.

A Homey Environment

Overall we were pleased with our experience. I think our family member would have felt lost in a larger environment. We liked that she was in a home environment with live-in staff and in a lovely neighborhood. There was something comforting to be able to hear a dryer in the background as we sat in the living room and watched TV. The house and her room were kept clean and she was always dressed in a nice outfit. The staff knew her, were welcoming to family members and would let us know if something needed attention. There were times I felt the 2 live-in caregivers should be provided more time off—a lot is expected of them. The management company was responsive to questions and requests. Looking back, while no place is perfect, we are grateful A Place for Mom suggested Avalon.

Thank you so much for your feedback and review. We still miss your sister. It has been about 7-8 years since your sister resided at Avalon and quite a few things are different from when your sister resided with us. We are so happy she did reside with us, and you chose Avalon for her. We also feel it is important to speak to some of your other portions of the review as well. We decorate our homes and facilities much like one would decorate their own home. We also paint many of the walls white or light colors and carpet them with light colors in order to keep the home bright. We also have ample lighting in our homes. All of our homes have at least one walk in shower as it did when your sister lived there. The shower does have a shower seat in it. We have been in operation for 25 years. We have done the staffing the same way the entire time. Our staff do and always have taken days off. They also have down time during each day as you are aware as you used to take one of the caregivers to the mall from time to time to spend time together shopping when she was off and not working. We are not forcing people to work for us. If they were not happy with the job and what it entails, they would leave. Yet over 85% of our caregivers have been with us 5 years or longer. Our staff are given vacation time. When an employee asks for days off, we give them their days off. We really understand you wanted a sympathy card. Back when your sister resided at Avalon House 7-8 years ago, and since the beginning 1-2 people from the management team call the family to give their condolences. We call as we feel that is more personal than a piece of paper mailed. In your case, two of us called and spoke to you to share our condolences and share how much your sister would be missed. For us the call is us being personal and is so much more personal than a card. With that, we get your expectation was that you receive a card and you needed more than the two personal phone calls we made to you. Since then, we do send sympathy cards to families when their loved one passes away as well as call them. Thank you again for sharing your feedback. It is very helpful and your sister is missed to this day.

Amazing home for my mom!

I am fortunate and grateful to have found Avalon Homes Cawdor Court for my 84 y.o. mother. Last October I received the dreaded call from the hospital - my mother had dementia and was unable to return home. I had 45 days to find her an assisted living facility, and I had no idea where to start my search. A friend told me about Avalon. I spoke to the administrator and scheduled a tour. My immediate impression was that this home felt like my mom’s home. The health aides ([name removed], [name removed], [name removed], [name removed]) have become our extended family, as have the other six residents. They know my mom and my family so well and provide care for my mom as if she were their own mother. The home is spotless and smells like home cooking every time I enter. I often will spend 1.5-2 hours each visit because it’s so welcoming and pleasant. Most importantly, my mom is HAPPY! She is thriving here and loves her fellow residents and healthcare aides. I couldn’t be more grateful or happier with my experience at Avalon!

Core staff invaluable

My step-father, a Korean War veteran, surgeon and Type A personality, was forced into retirement at the age of 86 due to the emerging consequences of dementia. We cared for him 7 years until the symptoms of the disease kept him up at all hours of the night, making routine sleep impossible. He stayed at Avalon House on Cawdor Court for 22 months and passed away 6 weeks shy of his 95th Birthday. What stuck with me is although his short-term memory had an upper limit of less than 3 minutes, something about the care they provided meant upon returning from excursions he recognized, smiled and embraced 2 of the staff nurses tasked with his care. This detail and his interacting with them as he did me (jokes, direct questions, patience he reserved for a select few) eased my worries about his wellbeing.

Supportive and caring

My mother was at Avalon Cawdor Court for several years. She had previously been at some larger chains. After constantly getting calls about my mother falling and visiting her and seeing her unkempt I made the move to Avalon and couldn’t have been happier. My mother always looked her best, the environment was always clean, warm and friendly. The homes are located in neighborhoods and residents have their own room. When visiting it felt like visiting someone’s private home. There were only 8 residents with two caregivers. They took good care of her until she passed away. [name removed] was a superb caregiver and I keep in touch with her even 10 years later. I have recommended Avalon to many of my friends and patients. I will continue to do so. They are miles above the larger chain facilities.

Wonderful home for my mother!

I am so thankful for the wonderful care that my mother received at Avalon House #5 on Cawdor Court. The staff are extremely kind and very knowledgeable on how to care for someone with dementia. They truly care about the residents who live in this small home, which is in a very nice neighborhood. When I brought my mom back to Avalon House after a stay in the hospital, my mother said. “ it feels good to be back home.” That brought tears to my eyes because I knew that I had made the right choice when finding a place for my mom to live. My mom lived there for about 5 years. I will always be grateful to the staff and owners who took such great care of my mother when I no longer could.

Residential Care at Avalon House number 6, on Hardwood Lane.

My relative has been at Avalon House for 11 and 1/2 years. As a dementia patient, she has been unable to care for herself. Her long stay there is a testament to the great care she received from Avalon and her private doctor. As her contact with Avalon I have spoken to the managers of the company and individual manager of that house many times over the years and have always been pleased with the results.

Awful experience

Facility was filthy. My father passed away there last month. Hospice never came in, even though called. My father was allowed to starve and dehydrate in this facility. Blood on walls, dirty sheets and floors. Absolutely no care whatsoever unless expressly asked for. He had remained in one position for so long that one of his eyes was sunken into his face when I and my siblings arrived. Had to ask repeatedly for him to have some hydration in some form but this was never given. Would never, ever recommend. Place was chosen by his spouse, who also did nothing to help him, however, I would think the facility would have intervened instead of allowing his pre-mature death.
